720 Sq. Ft.: Household Mutations – Part A
2010
About the Piece
720 sq. ft.: Household Mutations, is the culmination of a two-part installation. This exhibition explores spatial memorization and the relational complexities of interior vs. exterior, private vs. public and positive vs. negative spaces. Argote has transplanted the complete multi-room interior carpet from her childhood home to the gallery, thus commenting on associated memories related to domestic settings while examining the home as a standardized model that encapsulates personal, yet universal experiences. By re-appropriating the material, the carpet transcends its functional properties and turns into an isolated, dynamic installation emphasizing the psychology of space, as well as, the structural nature of the object. Removed from its original context, viewers are encouraged to rethink the carpet as a map, elevating it to a sculpture of historical personal narrative.
